Gardner’s arrival comes after last night’s worrying developments which saw engine-room enforcer Jose Semedo suffer a potentially serious-looking ankle injury sustained by Owls’ engine-room enforcer Jose Semedo in the 3-0 home loss to Wigan Athletic.

The club are awaiting news regarding the Portuguese’s fate after he was stretchered off and taken to hospital following a lengthy delay during the second half - with fears abound that he could be out for a lengthy spell.

Solihull-born Gardner, 22, brother of Sunderland midfielder Craig, has yet to play for the Villa this term, having made 18 appearances in total for the Midlanders.

He has also represented England at any variety of levels, including under-21s, having also spent a brief loan spell at Coventry in 2011.

Gardner will remain on loan at Hilsborough until March 12 and will be eligible for Saturday’s FA Cup clash with Charlton Athletic.
