“It was a fantastic performance, there’s only one thing we can say and that’s we didn’t put a ball in the net,” said Wilson, whose side remain second.

“They’ll say they defended well, but I think they had a bit of luck on their side as well.

“We completely dominated from start to finish, so we’re going to be disappointed of course. But we’ll take the frustrations out next week against Charlton.”

Stuart Beavon gave Wycombe their first victory in six league games.

Wycombe had not scored in the league since August 16 but Beavon ended that run with a well-struck effort from 15 yards after Harry Maguire’s mistake.

Lee Williamson should have turned the screw on Wycombe in the 20th minute but he headed over a cross from Ched Evans despite being unmarked.

Williamson also struck a low shot just past the foot of the post after Beavon’s strike.

Four minutes after the restart, only a good save from Steve Simonsen at the foot of his near post stopped Harris from doubling Wycombe’s lead.

In the 54th minute, Evans unleashed a shot which beat Bull but bounced back off the woodwork,

Joel Grant, who had been booked before the break, drew a good stop from Simonsen before Bull did well to smother Evans’s attempt from point-blank range.

Wilson made two changes in the 67th and 69th minutes with Jean-Francois and Cresswell coming on for Williams and Porter.

Neil Collins had an effort hacked off the line as United started to prise apart Wycombe’s rearguard but the defender also had to clear off the line at the other end.
