Sheffield Wednesday: Carlos Carvalhal on new signing Will Buckley

CARLOS CARVALHAL is confident he can reignite the career of Will Buckley after the winger joined Sheffield Wednesday on a season-long loan from Sunderland.

The 26-year-old, who has spent loan spells at Birmingham City and Leeds United last term after being on the periphery since moving to Wearside from Watford two years ago, could make his debut in Sunday’s televised home game with Aston Villa - and the Owls head coach believes that the Lancastrian can be an asset to Wednesday in time.

Carvalhal said: “Buckley is a good example of what we are doing here at Sheffield Wednesday. Last season, we brought in players in the beginning who had previously not done well over the past one or two seasons, but we recognised when we analysed them that they had abilities.

“Of course, now it is easy to say that we have a fantastic Barry Bannan and Jack Hunt and (Fernando) Forestieri. But I remember when they arrived at the club that while they were good players, that the previous season that they were not at the highest level.

“Buckley is exactly the same. It didn’t work for him last season, but we recognise his abilities, so our target and the target for him is to create the environment so that he can bring the maximum and the best ability that he has.

“We try to discover the best way with him. Not with the pressure, but with time.”
