Sheffield Wednesday midfielder looks for increased goals return

SHEFFIELD Wednesday midfielder Darren Potter is vowing to add goals to his game as the Owls push for promotion to the Championship.

The former Republic of Ireland international has bagged only five goals in 75 appearances since moving to Hillsborough two seasons ago and is desperate to improve that ratio.

His manager Alan Irvine also wants to see goals from all areas of the field and there have been five different scorers in the first eight games.

The Owls drew a blank for the first time this season in Sunday's televised defeat at Brentford, but remain top of the League One table.

Potter said: "If you had offered us this position at the start of the season, we would have snapped your hands off. We are leading the pack and long may that continue. We are quite happy – but it's only a start.

"It's fantastic if goals are coming from all over the pitch and hopefully I will start chipping in soon," he said. "It's a side of my game that I know I can improve on.

"When the gaffer first came in last season, his priority was keeping the team in the league," he added. "He didnt really have a lot of time to work with individuals but he is now and he is stamping his mark on things. All the lads are benefiting from his sessions and its a pleasure to work with him.

Former Liverpool youngster Potter, 25, thinks one of the main reasons for the club's impressive start has been the extra fitness work done this summer.

Irvine took his players away for a training camp in Austria and Potter said: "It was one of the toughest pre-seasons I have done anywhere but the hard work is paying dividends."

After starting the season on the bench, Potter will be hoping to keep his place in the side for next weekend's home game against Carlisle United.
