Sheffield Wednesday re-sign Derby's Varney

LUKE VARNEY has returned to Hillsborough on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The striker, who scored six goals in 18 starts in two previous loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday, is available to new manager Alan Irvine until the end of the season.

Varney had returned to parent club Derby County after his previous loan spell with the Owls ended following his goal in the 2-2 draw with Newcastle United on Boxing Day.

He was a favourite of former Owls manager Brian Laws, but Irvine said: "Luke Varney is a player I have admired very much since he started his career at Crewe.

"He has a tremendous work ethic and the right attributes that I seek in a player.

"Luke has already proved himself a very popular player during his two loan spells so far with Sheffield Wednesday and I am delighted to welcome him back to the club for the rest of the season."
