Norwich City had also been linked with the striker, along with Brentford, Huddersfield Town and Fulham.

Winnall won the Sky Bet Championship player of the month award for December after scoring six goals in six games for Barnsley.

He was a pivotal figure in helping Paul Heckingbottom's side win promotion in the League One play-offs last season and the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

In total, he has scored 48 goals since joining Barnsley in the summer of 2014.

The 25-year-old could head straight into the Wednesday squad to face Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

His signature would follow the captures of Charlton left-back Morgan Fox and West Brom winger Callum McManaman for Wednesday, who continue to be linked with Middlesbrough forward Jordan Rhodes.
