Eddie Howe provides Alekander Isak update ahead of Newcastle United's FA Cup clash at Sheffield Wednesday

Eddie Howe is unsure if Newcastle United’s record signing Alekander Isak will be fit enough to feature against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup on Saturday evening.

The Sweden international scored twice in his first three Premier League appearances for the Magpies but has not featured since September’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth due to a hamstring problem.

Howe hopes the player will make his return at some point this month but was unable to confirm if he would be a part of the squad that takes on the Owls in the third round of the FA Cup at Hillsborough.

"Let's get through training today. I'm not clear - I just don't want to put pressure on him and we want to introduce him at the right time. He's getting closer all the time and he has trained. Let's wait and see,” said Howe.

Howe did hint at some changes to his squad, with Newcastle last in action on Tuesday evening as they held Premier League leaders Arsenal to a 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium.

He added: "It's going to be down to me to try to get the balance right of how we prepare for this game and what team we pick. We want to win the game and want to go through.

"The biggest thing is how we approach the game and the mentality of the group. Their motivation levels, professionalism, desire. We're under no illusions that it'll be a difficult task but it'll be more difficult if we're not in the right place ourselves.”
