Garry Monk sacked by Sheffield Wednesday

The former Leeds United and Middlesbrough manager took charge at Hillsborough in September 2019 but has now left the club along with his staff.

Monk took charge of the Owls 58 times, winning 19 games, drawing 14 while losing the remaining 25.

This season, he had overseen just three wins in 11 league fixtures while losing five games.

A desperate run of four straight league defeats - including a 3-0 loss at promoted South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United - was ended with last week’s 1-0 win against previously unbeaten Bournemouth. But Saturday’s goalless draw with Millwall at Hillsborough left the Owls 23rd in the table, a situation owner Dejphon Chansiri clearly found too much to bear.

And the fixture proved to be the final game in charge for Monk and his coaching staff.

In a statement, Chansiri, said: “I feel the time is right to make a change and I wish Garry and his team all the best for the future.

“I would like to say thank you for the time and effort Garry and his staff have committed to Sheffield Wednesday.”

The club said they would be making no further comment at this time.

Last week, after the Owls learned their points deduction would be halved to six points, Chansiri held a meeting with members of the media, in which he appeared to give Monk his backing, with talk of funds being made available in the January transfer window.

He said: “He knows what he needs to. We still hope we can push for the play-offs or even go up automatically.”

Within the space of three days, however, Monk sticking around at Hillsborough was no longer something Chansiri could countenance.

The speculation will now begin on who will succeed Monk in the Owls’ dugout, with Paul Cook, Eddie Howe, Nigel Pearson, Tony Pulis among those already mentioned as potential candidates.
