Amado next in Wednesday’s sights after former Red Devil Lee signs in

SHEFFIELD Wednesday are set to sign Portuguese midfielder Diogo Amado after wrapping up a deal yesterday for defender Kieran Lee.

Amado has been recommended by current Owls player Jose Semedo, who knows the 22-year-old from his former club Sporting Lisbon.

The Portuguese Under-21 international is keen to move to English football from Uniao Leiria after spending time on loan at Estorial Praia and has held talks with manager Dave Jones.

The Owls have, however, failed with a bid for Derby County striker Chris Maguire, who finished last season on loan at Portsmouth.

Maguire, 23, is a Scottish international who spent six years at Aberdeen before joining Derby two summers ago for around £400,000.

It is not clear whether the Owls plan to return with an improved offer for Maguire, who has started only seven league games at Pride Park.

Former Manchester United defender Lee, meanwhile, arrived at Hillsborough yesterday on a three-year deal from Oldham.

Lee, 23, told the Yorkshire Post that the move was a ‘no-brainer’ and an opportunity to push for a return to the Premier League.

He was released by Manchester United in 2008 after playing in both the Premier League and the League Cup for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side and spending time on loan with Queens Park Rangers in the Championship.

“It is very difficult for youngsters to become first-team players at Manchester United but I enjoyed my time there and it brought me up the right way,” he said.

“I have spent a few seasons in League One with Oldham but moving to Sheffield Wednesday now is a no-brainer.

“This is a massive club with real ambition. I am hoping to progress my career and getting back to the Premier League has to be the aim.”

Lee accepts that he will have to work hard to get into the team due to the form last season of regular right-back Lewis Buxton.
