Wednesday, whose winless start to the Sky Bet Championship campaign has extended to 12 games, were woefully off the pace for the opening hour and looked on course for a defeat after Marcus Pedersen scored a fine opener in the 16th minute, smashing home an 18-yard volley.

But on-loan striker Matty Fryatt, who is due to return to parent club Hull, signed off with a superb strike of his own to give Wednesday a 1-1 draw and share of the spoils. But Jones’ men had plenty of chances to snatch the win after his goal.

They were denied twice by Barnsley goalkeeper Jack Butland and Jones was left frustrated.

“We didn’t get going until the second half and once we got going we were the better team to go on and win it but unfortunately we didn’t,” he said.

“Don’t ask me why we didn’t start well, we couldn’t play it out because they were pressing us and when we did try playing it out we conceded.

“I think in the second half the changes sorted it out and we created chances.

“We’ve come from behind and we stuck in there and got our rewards and if we took our chances we could have won it.

“In the second half their keeper has made two good saves, I just wish we could have won it, we’re just missing that little bit of luck at the minute.”

Fryatt’s effort was the second of his month-long stay at Hillsborough and Jones will try to extend the deal.

“We are going to try, it’s down to the chairman and the finances and it’s difficult,” Jones said.

“Matty scored a great goal, he had a chance like that in his first game and missed it, so that just shows what games can do. We’ll wait and see what happens.”

Barnsley boss David Flitcroft was left counting the cost of some poor defending.

His Reds side were in firm control and by far the better team until they switched off, allowing Fryatt to score and deny them the three points.

“I was disappointed we didn’t lock the pitch down for their goal, we left it too open,” Flitcroft said.

“So we have to do better and defend better to keep a clean sheet and win games.

“We are growing into the season, I am pleased we are getting better and finding some momentum.

“It’s about grinding in and digging results but having the bigger picture to develop a team.

“We did the game plan and it completely worked, the moment we have not focused allowed Sheffield Wednesday to get in.

“I was desperate for a clean sheet and it’s disappointing - the quality of Pedersen’s goal should win the football match.”
