Burnley 1 Sheffield Wednesday 1: Recalled Maguire is proving a real asset for caretaker Gray

Chris MAGUIRE was literally ‘sent to Coventry’ by former Sheffield Wednesday manager Dave Jones but the Owls striker netted for the third consecutive game to earn a point at Turf Moor.

The Scotland striker was loaned to Coventry City before Jones was axed at Hillsborough, Maguire rarely getting a chance under the former manager.

But since being recalled by caretaker manager Stuart Gray, Maguire has impressed in wide midfield and he capped a fine week with an equaliser to peg back an impressive Burnley side.

Maguire had previously netted in the 6-0 thrashing of Leeds United before setting the Owls on the road to a 4-1 FA Cup win over Macclesfield Town.

Sam Vokes had given Burnley a deserved lead only for Maguire to reply instantly just before the break.

Owls goalkeeper Chris Kirkland was in inspired form to keep out the Clarets and Gray believes his side could have come away with victory after a late penalty claim was rejected.

Maguire appeared to be tripped by Jason Shackell but the referee booked the Wednesday striker for simulation.

Gray said: “I know Chris Maguire and he would not go down if he wasn’t touched. He was coming inside on his left foot and he will have wanted the shot, especially with the form he is in.

“I tell the players that if they are to win penalties they should do it honestly.

“They have given absolutely everything and credit to them. They deserve the rewards they are getting with the unbeaten run because they are simply working so hard.

“They couldn’t have given any more and any manager or coach can’t ask for anything more.”

The promotion-chasing Clarets took the lead three minutes before the break.

Vokes collected Dean Marney’s chipped pass over the top and slotted past the onrushing Kirkland for his 13th of the campaign.

That lead lasted less than a minute as Maguire drew the Owls level, firing home from close range after Burnley failed to clear Connor Wickham’s free-kick.

After a frantic end to the opening 45, it was a more serene start to the second half, but just before the hour mark Caolan Lavery’s deflected effort was somehow clawed away by Heaton. Liam Palmer got back to head Dave Jones’s shot off the line, and Ings hit the post.
