FT: Sheffield Wednesday 2 Tranmere Rovers 1

Sheffield Wednesday moved back into second place in League One, above their city rivals United, after maintaining their unbeaten home record.

Gary Megson’s side raced into a two-goal lead and should have had the match wrapped up long before Ian Goodison threatened a grandstand finish for the Merseysides.

Reda Johnson gave Wednesday the lead in the second minute, when Ben Marshall crossed for the defender to score from six yards with a free header.

And the Owls doubled their lead on seven minutes when Jon Otsemobor teed up Chris Lines who slotted the ball home for his first goal at Hillsborough.

Wednesday dominated proceedings thereafter but couldn’t wrap up the points.

And they were presented with a nervy finish when Ian Goodison pulled a goal back for Tranmere on 82 minutes with a powerful header past the returning Nicky Weaver.

Wednesday’s second win in 48 hours sees them climb above Sheffield United into second place, on 49 points.
