Gray hails Owls’ unbeaten opener

Gray, returning to his former club, made four changes to the line-up who beat Middlesbrough at the weekend, with the Owls continuing to prosper by turning in a thoroughly disciplined and resolute performance to continue their remarkable run of form at Turf Moor - where they haven’t now been beaten in nine visits since October 2000.

In the process, it continued Wednesday’s head-turning start to the campaign, now their best opening to a season since 1990-91 with Gray’s side now six games unbeaten heading into Saturday’s eagerly-anticipated televised home game with Nottingham Forest.

Gray, whose side progressed to round three thanks to a 78th-minute penalty from sub Atdhe Nuhiu, said: “We should have maybe got our noses in front from a couple of set plays. But we got it right in both boxes.

“I thought we defended very well.

“I didn’t think it was a smash and grab result. I thought we started very well. We just tinkered with the shape a little bit and knocked them back.

“I think Gary Madine’s ball retention was good at times and caused the centre-backs problems as well.”
