I won’t walk away from Owls, insists defiant Jones after derby loss

Wednesday have won only one league game this season and goals from recalled Huddersfield pair Martin Paterson and Adam Clayton sent them crashing to a sixth defeat.

On-loan striker Connor Wickham thumped home a stoppage-time free-kick for Wednesday, but it was scant consolation and moments later they were booed off the pitch by frustrated Owls fans.

When asked about his future at the club, Jones said: “It’s part and parcel of being a football manager - if you’re not doing well people always think change is for the best.

“You’ve got to be prepared and ready for those questions. You reporters have a job to do, but I look at it in a positive way.

“There have been so many managers here - when do you stop?

“There is no magic formula other than hard work and me and my staff work and work because we want to get it right.

“I did not kick a ball out there. I have a responsibility because I pick the team, but you need your players to perform.

“We all have a responsibility, every single one of us and I won’t single anyone out because we’re all in it together.”

When asked if he was confident club chairman Milan Mandaric would give him more time, Jones added: “I hope I am.

“I don’t see why I should keep having to bring up my record (as a manager).

“It’s there and it cannot be shot at. This season it’s hard, but I’m not going to give up and walk away.

“I’m made of stronger stuff and I need the players to understand that so they can fight and scrap their way out of it.

“If you keep changing people, you’ve got to ask why? It’s still going to be the same players and the same stadium.

“We have a block when we play here, but if you start slaughtering the players you lose them and we need them to be big and brave.”

Huddersfield were in complete control once striker Paterson scored his first goal for the club in the 11th minute and could have scored more before Clayton drilled home a game-clinching second in the 68th minute.

Paterson and Clayton appear to have put their alleged recent training ground bust-up behind them.

The pair were left out of the matchday squad for last month’s home win over Leeds following reports of a training ground altercation and boss Mark Robins saw the funny side when they celebrated Paterson’s opener with mock fisticuffs.

“It’s fitting that they got on the scoresheet together,” said a smiling Robins.

“I do things a certain way, but by no stretch of the imagination can we afford to leave our better players out for long periods, but they’ve got to tow the line.

“I’m pleased for them, but I’m pleased for everybody, I thought we were outstanding.”

Robins added: “Paterson is a top player. It’s taken him a little bit of time to settle down for whatever reason, but if he performs like that he will be a handful in the Championship.”
