Sheffield Wednesday manager Dave Jones hopes to keep striker Connor Wickham for the rest of the season after the on-loan striker grabbed the winner to stun promotion hopefuls Leicester.

The 19-year-old netted his first goal for the Owls at the King Power Stadium, his last match of his six-game loan deal from Sunderland.

But the England Under-21 striker has impressed Jones with his work rate and willingness to learn, and will talk to Black Cats boss Martin O’Neill about extending his loan.

“I will sit down with the chairman, talk to Martin O’Neill up at Sunderland and see where we go from here,” said Jones.

“He’s a pleasure to work with, he wants to learn and I’m delighted for the lad that he has got his goal.”

Wickham would like to extend his time at Hillsborough.

“I’m really enjoying myself, but it’s down to the clubs now and what will be will be,” he said.

“I’m playing games here and really enjoying myself and the gaffer has a lot of faith in me.

“I’ve played a lot of football since I’ve been here and I’m thankful for that.

“A decision will be made, but I am happy to be here.”

Wickham’s goal came on 70 minutes, volleying home Lewis Buxton’s superb cross.

The points earned nudged the Owls four points clear of the drop zone.

“I haven’t scored in a while so I didn’t know what to do after I did,” said Wickham. “But as soon as the ball came down I knew I was going to take it first time.

“I just aimed to get it on target and I don’t think there was much the goalkeeper could do.

“He nearly stopped it, but there was just a bit too much power on it.

“Thankfully it went in and I scored my first goal for the club and I’m grateful it turned out to be the winning one.”

David Nugent brought a good save out of Owls’ goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, who also denied Ben Marshall and Ritchie De Laet in the first half.
