Millwall v Sheffield Wednesday: Owls out for vengeance

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Stuart Gray sends his team out at Millwall tonight seeking revenge for one of their lowest moments of the season.

The Owls had made a promising start to the campaign back in August, winning two and not conceding a goal in their first three games, when the Lions visited Hillsborough.

For 94 minutes they looked set to claim another three points until Magaye Gueye snatched an equaliser for Ian Holloway’s men deep into stoppage time.

Little did Gray or the Owls know at the time, but it would be another month before they won at home in the Championship, and only two further wins on home soil would follow so far.

“This was definitely a game we should have won at home, but it just shows you have to keep going,” recalled Gray.

“We switched off in the 95th minute and they got their rewards. It was another two points thrown away. It’ll happen again, that’s part and parcel of football.

“We’ve got to build on our performance given at Derby. We gave Derby a good game; we’ve got to make sure we turn up (tonight) against Millwall.”

Despite their efforts at Derby on Saturday, Wednesday’s winless run stands at seven games, a sequence that has seen them drop out of the play-off picture.

In fact, defeat tonight to a team that occupies the final place in the relegation zone would leave the Owls just six points above the bottom three. But Gray is only looking upwards.

“Progress is we’ve got to finish higher than we did last season,” said Gray, whose Wednesday side finished 16th.

“You’ve got to try and tick every box better than you did last season. At the moment we haven’t scored enough goals, defensively we’ve been okay.

“The most important thing is where you finish.”

Sergiu Bus is expected to be out for two to three weeks with a groin strain.

Chris Kirkland deputises for Kieren Westwood at the start of the latter’s three-match ban while Glenn Loovens is out injured and Jose Semedo is a doubt.

The Owls are set to appeal against Westwood’s dismissal at Derby. “We felt it was a double punishment,” said Gray.
