New deal is Prutton’s aim after comeback

The former Leeds United midfielder made a welcome return to action in the midweek defeat at Wigan Athletic after coming off the bench.

Now Prutton is hoping for a start as Birmingham City, the side he faced before suffering the ankle injury in training, head to Hillsborough.

He said: “The only currency you have as a footballer is playing games. If you are not playing, as a footballer then you are not much use to anyone.

“I don’t say that with any pessimism or anything like that.This is a business and it isn’t the responsibility of the club to employ you for ‘x’ number of years.

“You can’t take any of it personally. There have been plenty of better players that have come and gone from Sheffield Wednesday. But this is a fantastic place to be.”

In Prutton’s absence, Wednesday have had something of a rollercoaster of a season with a slump in the autumn leaving the club with just one win to their name at the start of December.

Dave Jones was then sacked, paving the way for Stuart Gray to take charge and the Owls’ head coach has done an impressive job to lead his side away from trouble.

Not, however, that Wednesday can relax just yet with 10 points separating the Yorkshire outfit from Yeovil Town in the third relegation place.

Charlton, bottom but with three or four games in hand on their rivals, are complicating matters, as if they go on a run then several sides could be dragged into bother.

Prutton added: “We are not safe yet, not by any stretch.

“To me, Stuart has done a fantastic job. He understands that the relationship between players and the manager is important.”
