Oldham Athletic 0 Sheffield Wednesday 2: Prutton trickery gives Owls’ travelling fans something to cheer

Recalled David Prutton conjured up a superb goal to send Sheffield Wednesday on their way to an impressive away win at Boundary Park.

In-form Oldham had won their last three home games and it showed as they had the best of the action in the opening 45 minutes.

The Owls were missing top scorer Gary Madine, defender Lewis Buxton and midfielder James O’Connor – the latter being replaced by Prutton, who has been the on the periphery of the team this season.

But he showed his value to the Owls by opening the scoring just after the hour mark to the delight of the 4,000 travelling away fans.

Twice he flicked the ball over a bamboozled defender, before turning and firing low into the bottom corner of the net.

Wednesday made sure of all three points late in the game when substitute Ryan Lowe - on at half-time for Ben Marshall - tucked away a penalty after on-loan Snchez Watt was fouled in the box. The former Leeds United loan striker, on a temporary contract from Arsenal, was making his Owls debut.

“I am absolutely delighted because this was always going to be a difficult game.

“They are well organised and have a right good go. We’ve got 4,000 people here and we have a tendency to let them down but today we’ve not done that.

“It was a bit of a battle and a scrap in the first half, as you would expect but we’ve come away from home, kept a clean sheet and won 2-0.”

Oldham manager Paul Dickov said: “I’m delighted with our players today – the application, attitude work-rate and some of the football we played was excellent.

“The players feel deep down as if they should have got something from the game today.”
