Owls signing Maguire eager to make an impact after his Derby frustration

SCOTTISH international striker Chris Maguire has become the fifth new arrival of the summer at Sheffield Wednesday.

Maguire, 23, joined the Owls for an undisclosed free from Derby County yesterday after several weeks of negotiations.

“I’m delighted to be here. It’s a massive club and I’m looking forward to getting started,” he said. “I wasn’t really given a chance at Derby and needed a fresh start.”

Maguire made only three starts for Derby after moving south of the border last summer in a £400,000 move from Aberdeen. He spent the final months of last season on loan at Portsmouth where he scored three goals in 11 appearances.

“I want to show everybody at Sheffield Wednesday what I can do and hopefully they will give me the credit when I’m doing well,” he said. “I hope to bring a bit of creativity, chip in with a few goals, and set up a few as well. I just want to help the team and help the club move forward.

“The main objective for now is to work hard in pre-season and get the best start we can.”

Owls manager Dave Jones had previously focused his attentions on strengthening at the back with Anthony Gardner, Kieran Lee, Joe Mattock, and goalkeeper Chris Kirkland all moving to Hillsborough.

Former West Ham United and Nottingham Forest striker Marlon Harewood, meanwhile, has been invited to join the Owls for pre-season training.
