Sheffield Wednesday 3 Swindon Town 1: Mellor reaches milestone

NEIL Mellor could be a player in demand this summer after breaking the 20-goal barrier for Sheffield Wednesday yesterday.

The former Liverpool striker netted twice to help relegate Swindon Town as the Owls made it four successive home wins.

Manager Gary Megson is playing his cards close to his chest on whether he wants to make Mellor’s loan deal from Preston North End permanent.

But Preston’s relegation to League One yesterday means they will have been alerted to Mellor’s goals record at this level and may want the striker to see out his contract at Deepdale next season.

One player Megson has confirmed he wants to keep at Hillsborough is winger Jermaine Johnson who was a constant threat against Swindon, but will be out of contract in the summer.

The Owls went two ahead through Darren Potter’s long-range effort and Mellor’s looping header. Jonathan Douglas cracked in a 25-yard stunner before Mellor wrapped up the points after the break.
