Sheffield Wednesday: Gray: It was the win that counted, not the performance.

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY head coach Stuart Gray admits he was delighted to reward the Owls’ long-suffering fans with a much-needed home win over play-off chasing Brentford.

Wednesdayites have endured meagre pickings at Hillsborough this term, with last night’s 1-0 success, thanks to a strike 15 minutes from time from Kieran Lee securing just their fifth at S6 in the Championship this season – and only their second since Boxing Day.

It was far from a free-flowing performance from the Owls, on a night when the Bees had the better chances, but home supporters had reason to smile at the final whistle as the hosts moved up to 11th.

Gray, whose side travel to leaders Bournemouth on Saturday, said: “I think we have played better and lost and drawn games. But the most important thing was getting a win.

“Typical Sheffield Wednesday, we had opportunities to get that second goal and couldn’t kill it off and in the end, credit to Brentford, they chased the game and caused one or two problems and missed a good chance at the death.

“I am pleased with the win and pleased for the fans as well because they haven’t seen many wins here this season.

“You could hear it at the final whistle, the most important thing was the result and credit to the players.

“We are in that mid-table position where people tend to think: ‘hang on a minute, the boys have got their flip-flops on.’

“Well, we haven’t and we have a big say and have another big say going to Bournemouth.”

“The important and pleasing thing was the clean sheet and the 1-0 victory.”

The night was also notable for the Owls equalling a club record of clean sheets in a season, which the Owls last achieved in 1978-79 and 1979-80 with 17 shut-outs.

Gray added: “It’s been a while coming, but a fantastic achievement.

“It’s a credit to Westy (Kieren Westwood), Chris Kirkland and all the defenders really. We defend with 11 and attack 11. It’s good news.

“I have an honest bunch who enjoy defending and being hit with the ball and put their bodies on the line.”

Sam Hutchinson missed the game with a virus, Gray confirmed.
