Sheffield Wednesday have a new dynamic now – Carvalhal

The Portuguese head coach takes his Owls side to Burnley following the international break with the options at his disposal far more plentiful than at the end of August.

New players, including £3m man Fernando Forestieri and ex-Watford team-mate Daniel Pudil, come into the equation along with Barry Bannan and Michael Turner and the quartet could all make their debuts at Turf Moor.

With Kieren Westwood, Glenn Loovens and Sam Hutchinson also likely to be available after returning to training, and his existing squad fully refreshed, Carvalhal has the luxury of picking from considerable strength this weekend.

The smart money is on tomorrow’s line-up being vastly different to the one that featured in the 3-1 loss to Middlesbrough on August 29.

Head coach Carvalhal, whose side have not won in the league since the opening weekend of the season, said: “ It’s like a new start. Our season starts now – we have a new dynamic.

“We know we have difficult games but we have more solutions and that is important as this competition is a marathon. I believe we will improve the team week by week.

“I have received four to five new players who haven’t played yet and we’ve got Glenn and Keiren who have been out who have good quality.

“The players understand the level of the training is completely different now.

“We have raised the standard and if you talk with the players, they will tell you the same. “

With the arrival of Forestieri in particular, whose creative skills in a continental-style 
No 10 role are something for which Carvahal has been hankering, expectation levels have raised a notch or two again at S6 – more so given another significant seven-figure overlay.

Yet, equally, Carvahal is mindful of a spot of reality too, with the Owls without a league win in four games.

He added: “We need a win.

“We have won the games in the cup, but have not had an easy (league) start as we have played some teams who have a big expectation to get promoted.

“It was not an easy start but it’s not the way that you start, it’s the way that you finish.”
