Sheffield Wednesday: Owls were close to landing target: Gray

The Owls ended their seven-game run without a league win as they eased past the Lions at the New Den, thanks to a clinical second-half performance.

Lewis McGugan gave the Owls the Lead shortly after half time after slotting home from a deadly counter attack, with their lead doubled by Atdhe Nuhiu who converted a fine Jacques Maghoma cross.

Any doubt of a late comeback was quashed when Stevie May sealed all three points late on before Diego Fabbrini’s late consolation.

It ensured that Gray left the capital with plenty to savour, despite missing out on a target, although he has hinted that the situation may soon change and that he may add to his numbers shortly.

Asked if they were ‘close to new captures, Gray said: “We were. It’s very frustrating again. I’m not the only one, there’s lots of Championship managers trying to bring players in and strengthen, but it’s dictated by what the Premier League boys want to do at this moment in time.

“Theres still a chance. Somebody has picked up an injury in training and he (the manager) wants to see how he is.

“Hopefully we’ll have something to announce.”

On his side’s performance, he added: ”We deserved the win on our second-half performance.

“We knew they would come out of the traps and for the first 20 minutes, we were hanging in there with some great defending.

“But after that we got the ball down and started to play and we were brave, then we took control of the game.”

The Owls now face a tough home fixture against second placed Middlesbrough on Saturday who bounced back from their weekend loss to Leeds to beat Bolton Wanderers 1-0.
