Sheffield Weds 0 Derby 0: Carvalhal takes solace from Owls’ quality after lamenting ‘loss’ of points against Rams

CARLOS CARVALHAL believes that Sheffield Wednesday “lost two points” after being held to a 0-0 home draw with Championship high-fliers Derby County as they spurned the chance of propelling themselves into the play-off places.

The Owls edged proceedings in an undistinguished stalemate and while Wednesday’s head coach Carvalhal was delighted with the tactical acumen of his side, he was left to lament a failure to secure victory.

The draw extended Wednesday’s sequence without a win against any of the top six in the division so far in 2015-16 to five games, with Carvalhal’s side having drawn against leaders Brighton, Hull City and now Derby and lost to Middlesbrough and Burnley.

Carvalhal, who said prior to the match that yesterday’s encounter was bigger than his side’s Capital One Cup quarter-final at Stoke City, said: “I am not happy about the score as we deserved to win.

“But I am absolutely happy about the quality that we played and very happy about the spirit and vibe of the team who are together.

“But we lost two points in my opinion. I think we deserved more than we got.

“We played against a team who are trying to get promoted and were very near to getting promoted in the last two seasons.

“They have a really strong team and very good quality, while we have brought in 15 or 16 new players and a new coach and style of play.

“It is after just five months of work and we must be happy and proud.

“We still think we can do better and we must do better in the future.”

Carvalhal’s counterpart Paul Clement, who has presided over the Rams’ best seasonal start in 67 years, felt the Owls edged yesterday’s game and admitted his side were below par – while paying tribute to the hosts’ organisational qualities

Clement, whose side could have drawn level with second-placed Middlesbrough with victory, said: “I didn’t think we played very well.

“I was very disappointed with the first half when we didn’t create anything. It was slightly better in the second half and we were only a crossbar away from winning it.

“But, overall, it was probably a fair result and they had slightly more chances.

“If they (Wednesday) keep playing like that, they will be very difficult to break down. But it’s about scoring goals as well, though.”
