Strachan gives Owls striker May first call-up

The pair, who both left Scotland in the summer, are in Gordon Strachan’s squad for the European Championship qualifiers against Georgia and Poland.

Aberdeen defender Mark Reynolds is among just three Scottish-based players in the pool alongside Celtic pair Craig Gordon and Scott Brown.

May has scored three goals in eight Championship starts since moving from St Johnstone to Sheffield Wednesday, while 18-year-old Gauld was included in Sporting Lisbon’s Champions League squad following his multi-million pound move from Dundee United.

Strachan revealed another young player could be added to his 27-man squad, which includes Hull City duo, left-back Andrew Robertson and goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

“They are good young players. I like to do that. If you look at the squads over the last year or so, I like to bring in people that I don’t know personally.

“I don’t know them personally but I like to see how they deal with the squad and I just like to meet these young players.

“I’m sure in the future they will make an impression and will be regulars in the squad.

“It’s good to meet them and see how they interact with the rest of the squad.

“I may add another one into that, a player that I have only seen from afar. I’m waiting on injury reports from games (last night).”

Midfielder Brown returns after missing the 2-1 defeat in Germany with a hamstring injury.

His Celtic team-mates Callum MacGregor and Charlie Mulgrew drop out, the latter having picked up a knee injury, along with Wolves midfielder Kevin McDonald.

Reynolds keeps his place after getting a late call-up for the opening qualifier against the world champions.
