Sturridge’s illness could open door for Rhodes

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN striker Jordan Rhodes could receive a late call-up to the Team GB Olympic squad after Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo confirmed Daniel Sturridge is suffering from viral meningitis.

The 22-year-old Blues forward, named in Stuart Pearce’s 18-man squad just a few days ago, fell ill over the weekend with what is typically considered a mild strain of the disease.

Team GB squad is set to meet in Loughborough next weekend and the manager has until July 25 to select a replacement should Sturridge be forced to withdraw and Rhodes, as one of four players placed on standby, is firmly in Pearce’s thoughts.

On Sturridge, Di Matteo said: “Daniel has viral meningitis but hopefully he will get well as soon as possible and be able to join Olympics squad.

“I think it’s a question of daily monitoring his health, that’s what matters most to him, his family and ourselves.

“We have had a doctor with him since day one and we are being updated on hourly basis.”

Doncaster Rovers director of football Mickey Walker has left the club after 12 years on the coaching staff.

Walker, who suffered a heart attack last season, said: “There’s no bitterness in the parting. I wish Dean Saunders and the boys all the best for next season. I still believe I have something to offer with my extensive experience and my contacts book.”

Former Rovers defender Adam Lockwood has joined Bury after being released, while Barnsley have announced that Hayselden will be the club’s shirt sponsors next season.

Sheffield Wednesday’s trip to Middlesbrough has been moved to Friday November 9, kick-off 7.45pm for live coverage on Sky TV.
