Walsall 1 Sheffield Wednesday 1: Madine could have had hat-trick - Megson

Sheffield Wednesday earned a point thanks to Neil Mellor’s equaliser at struggling Walsall today.

Wednesday’s trip to the Midlands was one of just four games remaining before Gary Megson can start his summer rebuilding.

Giles Coke replaced Jermaine Johnson in midfield, with Nicky Weaver returning to the bench after an injury lay-off.

Strugglers Walsall made a spirited start and took the lead on 10 minutes when Jon Macken pounced.

But the Owls were level on 26 minutes. Lewis Buxton’s shot caused panic and on-loan Mellor chipped the loose ball home for an equaliser.

Owls manager Megson said: “We had enough chances to win that game and we are disappointed we didn’t. Gary (Madine) is disappointed because he feels he could have had a hat trick but he played very well today and if he keeps playing like that, the goals will come.

“Walsall started the game very well forcing four or five corners. They scored and I think everyone in the ground could see that was coming. But we rolled up our sleeves, recovered well and took the game back to Walsall.”
