Wednesday’s determination leaves striker Howard in optimistic mood

Steve Howard believes the ‘never say die’ fighting spirit inside Hillsborough will keep Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.

The veteran striker – who arrrived on loan last week from Hartlepool United – made his Owls debut in Monday’s 1-1 draw at Bristol City.

Jermaine Johnson’s first-half effort looked to have secured victory at Ashton Gate, only for Sam Baldock to snatch a stoppage-time equaliser.

Four points from a possible six, after the 2-1 win over Barnsley on Saturday, keep Wednesday in touching distance of a group of clubs including this weekend’s Hillsborough visitors, Blackburn Rovers.

After watching from the stands against the Tykes, 36-year-old Howard is keen to experience playing in the blue and white stripes on a ground he has graced many times.

“There are a great set of lads at this club and they are all fighting,” Howard said.

“There is a ‘never say die’ attitude here and without a shadow of a doubt, I believe this club can stay up.

“It was very frustrating and almost felt like a loss at Bristol. We played some good stuff, did well to get the goal but we got pipped at the end.”

Big-spending Blackburn are without a Championship victory since February 9 and are level on 47 points with both Wednesday and Barnsley.

“It would be nice to play some part in the game without a doubt,” said former Leicester City and Luton Town striker Howard. “The atmosphere against Barnsley was absolutely unbelievable.

“I’ve got a lot of friends who are Wednesday fans, I’ve played here many times and it’s a massive club. If I’m called upon I’ll be ready to help the team out.

“I told the manager I want to come here, enjoy it and play with a smile on my face which I haven’t done for a while. I thoroughly enjoyed my debut and now I want to help the club push on.”
