Wolves 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0: Owls boss Jones saw another game to me, says Solbakken

Sheffield Wednesday manager Dave Jones hit out at referee
Simon Hooper after his side slipped to defeat at Wolves.

Jones was unhappy that match-winner Bakary Sako got a second chance to take the free-kick that helped earn Wolves their fourth straight victory, and the fact that Wednesday did not get a second-minute penalty when Michail Antonio was sent tumbling by Stephen Ward.

The defeat left Wednesday on seven points, one above second-bottom Ipswich. They have lost their last six league and cup matches since their 19-match unbeaten run came to an end.

Sako attempted to take the 43rd-minute free-kick quickly and that saw him booked by Hooper as his shot flew wide. But Sako also got a second chance and this time he was on target, with his low drive whistling past Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland for the only goal of the game.

Former Wolves boss Jones said: “You need a bit of help along the way and the match hinged on two decisions. In my book the referee cocked both of them up. He has got to give a penalty. It is a clear-cut penalty. Antonio was clipped.

“As for the free-kick, the referee told me that he did tell the player to wait for the whistle and if he did then he made the right decision.

“But I have watched the video over and over again and I didn’t see it. If he told the lad to wait for the whistle why did he do it?

“The rules say that if the referee has told him to wait for the whistle then he gets a second chance. I am debating whether he was told to wait for the whistle. My players didn’t hear it.

“I think he (the referee) was too busy arguing with the wall to get it back. We feel hard done by and Wolves should feel lucky they came away with three points.”

Jones said: “At the moment the players feel everything they do is going against them.

“We created good chances against a good team but when things aren’t going well people tend to snatch at things. We just have to keep going and relax a bit more in front of goal.”

Wolves boss Stale Solbakken had a different view to Jones on Sako’s free-kick and felt that Hooper made the right decision.

Solbakken said: “That is a clear one. The referee says ‘I have to blow the whistle’. That is why he gets the yellow card and the referee does everything right. He got that spot on – first the yellow and the goal.”

Solbakken also disputed Jones’s claims that Wolves were lucky to win. “He has seen another game to me,” added Solbakken.
