Neil Thompson has no Liam Shaw concerns as Sheffield Wednesday's injury list shows no signs of shortening yet

Neil Thompson is not expecting to have any key players back for Saturday's Championship game against fellow relegation strugglers Birmingham City but nor does he expect to “lose” Liam Shaw mentally now the midfielder has signed a pre-contract agreement with Celtic.

Jack Marriott, Massimo Luongo, Andre Green, Joost van Aken and Moses Odubajo all missed the 1-0 midweek defeat at Stoke City, and none are expected back for Saturday's home game. Shaw did play in the Potteries, and the caretaker manager was happy with what he saw.

Asked about the fitness of Luongo and Green, Thompson said: “Neither of them will be available for the weekend unfortunately but we'll see how that goes next week.

“Joost's definitely quite a long way away, Moses is going to be a few weeks rather than a week.

“They're continuing their rehab but it takes time, unfortunately. We want as many people on board as we can and injury-free but injuries are part and parcel of what we do.”

Thompson confirmed striker Marriott's problem was not an issue, but would not go further into it that that. It is hoped he will be back in training on Monday.

Shaw will move to the Scottish Premiership when his contract expires in the summer, but Thompson has no concerns about what he will get from the 19-year-old in the meantime.

“Liam played the other night and did a good job, he put the work in without a shadow of doubt and that's as far as it goes,” he said.

“Every player that's here is committed to what we're doing, everyone is a key player in what we're trying to do, not just when we're playing. You need to have the right attitude around the building and in training. We've had that and it's got to continue. It's not just about one individual, it's about the group because the group is going to get us over the line, without a shadow of doubt.”

One player who reaffirmed his commitment this week is captain Barry Bannan, who has signed a new contract which will take him to the end of the 2022-23 season. Thompson is keen to point out contracts are not his remit, but he is delighted to know the Scot will be staying at the club.

“Technically he's a fantastic player, he's got bags of ability, he can open defences up, he's got something different,” said Thompson. “I've had loads of discussions with him.

“Sometimes in our situation you don't get on the ball as much as you'd like, things get scrappy at times like they did against Stoke and we've all got to muck in. Baz has done that.

“When Baz gets on the ball we can dictate the play and the ball does get attracted to him.

“He's a big player for us in the past, now and in the future.”
