Sheffield Wednesday in desperate need of transfer window

Energy, quality, commitment, consistency and leadership – all were missing from Sheffield Wednesday in Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat at Huddersfield Town, according to manager Tony Pulis.

In the first half-hour, he could have added organisation, too.

With the games coming so thick and fast, every team can have bad days in this season’s Championship. A side that acquitted itself well at Norwich City days earlier certainly did.

“That just was not good enough from a group of players that played on Saturday one of the best teams in the league and really should have come away with a win,” reflected Pulis.

Ominously, he mentioned “more commitment in the second half without really showing any quality”. When the C word comes out, there is trouble.

Carlos Corberan has quickly established a style Huddersfield’s players seem able to slip in and out of but Pulis is at square one, looking for stability. The problem is, he needs freshness too.

“You are trying to look at the best formation and shape,” he explained.

“We’ve really got to try and knuckle something down.

“Joosty (Joost van Aken) has done very well for us but on Saturday he looked as though as he was tired and needed a break.

“They raised a bit of a gallop in the second half but nowhere near enough.”

Holding midfielder Massimo Luongo “looked very leggy” and was withdrawn at half-time.

The problems did not even stop there.

“I don’t think we have got that many real leaders,” said Pulis.

“The transfer window is going to be massive for this club.”

There is so much to do.
