Sheffield Wednesday midfielder out for four to six weeks after 'cynical' tackle

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY caretaker manager Neil Thompson has confirmed that young Owls midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru is out for four to six weeks with an ankle injury - following a cynical challenge by Brentford defender Henrik Dalsgaard in their 3-0 loss in midweek.

Dele-Bashiru, who only lasted 22 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute, is the last addition to Wednesday’s treatment room, with their luckless injury fortune continuing.

Thompson, whose relegation-threatened side will be seeking to end a run of three successive Championship losses when they visit Luton Town on Saturday, said: “I have spoken to the ‘doc’ about and he (Dele-Bashiru) is going to be out for four to six weeks.

“It was not a great tackle, was it and it is really unfortunate for him and everybody.

“The lad had not made any attempt to play the ball and was miles off it and just cynically brought him down and went straight into ‘Fizz’s’ ankle and he has rolled it.

“He had a scan and it is not great news for him. Hopefully, he will be back sooner rather than later, but it is four to six weeks.

“The ball was nowhere near when the guy makes the tackle to bring him down. It was not great...

“It is disappointing, but we have got to deal with it.”

Better news sees loanee Jack Marriott back involved this weekend, but a host of other players remain sidelined.

Andre Green (Achilles), Massimo Luongo (knee), Keiren Westwood (rib), Cameron Dawson (knee), Moses Odubajo (hamstring) and Joost van Aken (ankle) are all out.

On Marriott, Thompson commented: “He has trained this week and trained well. He looks in decent nick and has obviously missed a big chunk and hopefully we will get him involved going down to Luton

“Andre Green has done a little bit of training. He had another scan on his Achilles yesterday (Thursday) and then we will get that assessed at the beginning of next week again.

“As regards the others, it is a little bit of a list.”

On the fitness of Westwood, Wednesday will be forced to adopt a patient approach according to Thompson, who promoted youngster Luke Jackson to the bench to provide back-up for Joe Wildsmith at Brentford with Westwood and Dawson being sidelined.

He said: “As we go along, we will check (Westwood) and make sure it has heeled. Because we don’t want him to come back into training and for him to break down again or go into a game and break down. That’s not what you want.

“Even a bruised rib is painful and it will take a little bit of time to heal, but wee will be guided by when he has it checked out in a couple of weeks.”
