Sheffield Wednesday signing Chey Dunkley should improve them at both ends

The 28-year-old joins on a Bosman free transfer, and follows teenage midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru in moving to Hillsborough.

As well as shoring up an Owls defence which was a concern at times last season, Dunkley brings a threat at the other end too, having scored 13 goals in his three years with previous club Wigan Athletic, six of them last season. His campaign was ended in February by a broken leg and the relegated Latics released him in June. Dunkley also scored seven in 78 league matches for previous club Oxford United.

In Garry Monk's early days in the Steel City, the Owls' defensive record was fantastic but in keeping with the rest of their form, it tailed off alarmingly in the second half of his debut Hillsborough campaign.

Wednesday conceded five at home to Blackburn Rovers, three at home to Reading, Derby County, West Bromwich Albion and Preston North End, five at Brentford and Fulham, and three at Birmingham City and Queens Park Rangers.

After consecutive clean sheets against Brighton and Hove Albion and Leeds United in January, they only managed four more, including against relegated Charlton Athletic, plus Luton Town, and Huddersfield Town, who narrowly avoided the same fate.

Monk will therefore be hoping his latest addition can have a big impact at both ends.
