Why moral victories and pats on the back don't wash with Sheffield Wednesday's Josh Windass

WHEN it comes to receiving pats on the back following Sheffield Wednesday's game display at the home of a Premier League opponent, Josh Windass is not particularly interested.

Many League One clubs may have claimed a moral victory for taking a top-tier club in Southampton to penalties in a cup tie in front of their own fans.

But not the Owls - and certainly not their players - according to Windass.

The forward, who put Wednesday in front with his sixth goal of the season before England international James Ward-Prowse levelled, said: "We are actually really disappointed we never won.

"I know people said we were coming to a Premier League team, but we generally did not view it like that. We thought, man for man, we could beat them.

"In the first half, I thought we dominated and could have been two or three-nil up.

"Coming into the game, we did not believe there was a gulf in class and that we'd have enough to win. We were more than a match for them.

"Me and Baz (Barry Bannan) were speaking about it before the game, we share rooms in the hotel and we said 'we aren't going here to think we are playing against a Premier League team.’

"We were going to try and show we are better than them and I think we showed that in the first half."

Wednesday swap St Mary's for Accrington's rather more compact Wham Stadium on a return to league matters on Saturday - following a turnaround of under 72 hours.

For Windass, a former Stanley player, it will probably be a tougher test than midweek, in many ways. He for one will at least know what to expect in Lancashire.

Windass, who has scored in successive matches in two different cup competitions, added: "It's survival of the fittest. Sometimes, the games are harder in League One than playing against better opposition as it is so full throttle and in your face.

"I know the manager really well and it will be more difficult because of the style of play.

"We will go there with confidence - but not arrogance - to go and assert our confidence on the game and get the three points."
