The Tigers beat Sunderland 5-4 on spot kicks after a goalless 90 minutes the Black Cats had the better of, although Hull's superior fitness came into play in the final half-hour.

There was plenty for Grant McCann's side to improve on, but after finishing bottom of last season's Championship they just needed to start the new campaign on a positive note, and did so thanks to their accuracy from 12 yards.
