Swindon Town 3 Leeds United 0: Winless streak continues for Leeds after Paynter's double

SWINDON TOWN striker Billy Paynter scored a brace as Leeds United's title hopes suffered a further blow after a crushing defeat at the County Ground.

Charlie Austin's first-half strike and Paynter's quick-fire double condemned the Whites to their heaviest defeat of the season – and their first back-to-back league defeats.

Swindon started brightly and they carved out the first clear chance on eight minutes when Danny Ward's hanging cross was met by Paynter, but his header was too close to Casper Ankergren in the Leeds goal.

The lively Paynter went close again when he somehow nodded over Jon-Paul McGovern's corner from close range, before Austin put Swindon ahead in the 13th minute.

A crisp passing move ended with Paynter flicking Kevin Amankwaah's ball into Austin's path, and he slammed home his ninth goal in 10 games from just inside the box.

Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder McGovern almost doubled the Robins' lead soon afterwards but his deflected 20-yard shot was brilliantly saved by Ankergren.

Leeds improved towards the end of the first half and Jonathan Howson's dangerous cross was deflected narrowly over his own crossbar by full-back Scott Cuthbert.

Leeds manager Simon Grayson threw on Luciano Becchio and Lubomir Michalik at half-time but, after Bradley Johnson had been denied by a brilliant close-range save from David Lucas, Paynter's double put Swindon 3-0 up.

Paynter headed home Lescinel Jean-Francois's cross at the near post on the hour mark and blasted in his second from the penalty spot three minutes later, after Ankergren had fouled Austin.

Becchio had a goal ruled out for a foul late on as Leeds's winless run stretched to five games – leaving them three points behind League One table-toppers Norwich.
