Taste of life in the fast lane makes Ben Chilwell hungry for more with Huddersfield

HAVING made his senior debut against the Championship leaders less than a month ago, Ben Chilwell feels ready for the demands of helping Huddersfield Town start their new era on a positive note.

The 18-year-old full-back joined the Terriers on loan this week from Premier League outfit Leicester City.

Having been at the KP Stadium for five years, Chilwell’s debut came in Yorkshire as the Foxes bowed out of the Capital One Cup at the fourth-round stage.

“My debut was a great experience,” said the England Under-20s captain. “There was a full stadium at Hull and I was up against a physical winger in Mohamed Diame.

“I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I might be. Just more excited. I think I’ll be more nervous when my Huddersfield debut comes round.

“It is a group of lads I am not used to and I want to prove myself to them. So, I will be nervous but probably excited as well.”

Chilwell started his career as a youngster at Rushden & Diamonds but the club’s collapse a few years ago left him playing Sunday League football.

Leicester, eventually, made a move and the teenager admits the challenge of taking on the Tigers last month has left him hungry for more first-team action.

“Hull are challenging to go up to the Premier League and doing well,” he added. “It was a good challenge. I started off a bit shaky when getting used to it. But I felt to grow into the game. The players around me helped with position and telling me not to get too tight on Diame because he was looking to roll me.

“Being up against a good player like Diame settled my nerves a bit. I knew how good he was because I had watched him. I felt like I had nothing to lose.

“Now I want to build on that with Huddersfield.”
