The Tigers head to Blackburn Rovers today knowing that victory will be enough to seal a return to the top of the Championship thanks to Middlesbrough not taking on Leeds United at Elland Road until Monday.

Bruce, chasing his fourth promotion to the Premier League, said: “I haven’t looked at points targets but I have gone with wins. I think we might need 10 of them from our last 17 games. That would guarantee us 86 points and then if we could get a couple of draws in there too, I personally think that would be enough. That is the challenge for us, to win 10 of the next 17 games. We are certainly capable of that.”

Just six points separate leaders Boro from Sheffield Wednesday in sixth place and Bruce sees the South Yorkshire outfit as the “dark horses” of the promotion race.

“I said six months ago that it was the best Sheffield Wednesday team I’d seen for a few years,” he added. “They have added to that since and are on a bit of a roll. They could be the ones.”

Bruce also welcomed back Neil Warnock to management yesterday with Rotherham United, quipping: “He has retired more times than Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davies Jnr!”

“I don’t know how many times he has said enough is enough but it is like a drug. But you can see him succeeding at Rotherham, can’t you?”
