Transfer gossip (Tuesday, Aug 9): Bristol competition for Leeds | Mike Phelan odds on for Hull City | Boro chase striker | Owls deal delight

MIKE Phelan is now long odds-on to land the Hull City job on a permanent basis after news emerged that the 53-year-old would take charge of this Saturday's season opener against Leicester City.

Phelan is now as short as 1-6 with BetVictor to be named Steve Bruce’s full-time successor, with Betfair offering the best odds available on Tuesday morning at 8-15.

The Tigers are still said to be interested in appointing Chris Coleman but the Welsh manager is now as big as 8-1 with BetVictor, along with former Malaga manager Bernd Schuster.

Despite not having a full-time permanent manager, the Tigers are also chasing an attacking signing in the shape of Sion’s Moussa Konaté.

The 23-year-old Senegalese striker scored 14 goals and made nine assists in 39 matches for the Swiss club last season.

He is apparently valued by Sion at just over six million euros.

Hungarian international forward Nemanja Nikolic, who plays for Polish club Legia Warsaw, is another name said to be interesting the Tigers.

Middlesbrough, meanwhile, are reportedly interested in signing Bolton Wanders forward Zac Clough.

League One outfit Bolton would likely be prepared to sell the 21-year-old forward for around £2m but Fulham are also interested.

In the Championship, Leeds United have been long linked with a move for Walsall full-back Rico Henry, who is now interesting Bristol City.

Henry, 19, has been mooted as a possible replacement for star left-back Charlie Taylor who looks destined to leave the Whites but Leeds will have competition from the Robins should they wish to pursue him.

More likely is the arrival of defensive midfielder Liam Bridcutt from Sunderland - a player the Whites have been chasing all summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are celebrating a new ‘signing from within’ follwing the news that centre-back Tom Lees has signed a new five-year deal.

But in League One, Sheffield United are preparing for life without Che Adams who has joined Birmingham City for a fee in the region of £1,9m, money that Blades chief Chis Wilder hopes he can reinvest into strengthening his squad.

Asked if he hoped to get some of the fee United will receive for Adams, the 48-year-old replied: “I would like to. The board have backed me in terms of my judgment.

“We will look around, but they have to fit the profile and criteria if we are going to spend money on players to make us better.

“I do believe we are still light in certain positions.

“Even with Che in the group, I had spoken about us being light in certain areas.

West Ham midfielder Josh Cullen, meanwhile, has rejoined Bradford City on loan until January.

Back in the Championship, Huddersfield Town head coach David Wagner has revealed there has been no interest shown in striker Nahki Wells, despite reports that both Derby County and Norwich City were keen on securing the forward’s services.

Rotherham United manager Alan Stubbs remains optimistic that the Millers will bring in new recruits before next weekend.

He said: “We are hopeful that we might conclude some business this week. Whether that is before the (Morecambe) game, only time will tell.”

Elsewhere, Barnsley defender Lewin Nyatanga has also joined Northampton Town on loan.
