Transfer gossip (Wednesday, March 2): Sheffield duo eye reinforcements

Nigel Adkins is hopeful that Middlesbrough centre-back Alex Baptiste will not be his only capture of the emergency loan window.

The 30-year-old former Bolton Wanderers and Blackpool defender Baptiste played in the last 25 minutes of Sheffield United’s 1-0 defeat to League One leaders Burton Albion after completing a loan move that will see him play at Bramall Lane until the end of the season after recovering from a broken leg.

Adkins is confident of bringing in new faces on loan with reports suggesting he has opened talks with two more potential targets although has refused to divulge the details of his recruitment strategy.

The Blades are rumoured to be seeking more attacking options as they look to make a push for a play-off spot.

Sheffield Wednesday scouts were in attendance as Benfica beat Uniao de Madeira in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.

Among those to feature included former Fulham striker Kostas Mitroglou, former Queens Park Rangers and Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar and highly-rated youngster Renato Sanches was an unused substitute.

Hull City could let youngsters Max Clark and Johan Ter Horst leave during the emergency loan window.

Both are a long way down the pecking order at the KC Stadium.
