Versatility of Blair provides Doncaster with plenty of options going forward

Matty Blair is happy to be Mr Versatile if it helps Doncaster Rovers bounce back from relegation at the first attempt.

Rovers dropped into the fourth tier of English football last year, and suffered a tricky start which saw them pick up just one point from their two opening games.

But four league wins out of five – their only defeat came away to Crewe – and Rovers have climbed to fourth spot.

They turned in a stunning 5-1 display to win at Morecambe last week, and midfielder Blair – playing as a right-back – even got on the scoresheet.

Today Rovers host struggling Newport County at the Keepmoat Stadium – it’s the first time the two clubs have met in the league – as they look to catch early leaders Plymouth.

As for former York City star Blair, 27, he is happy to play wherever manager Darren Ferguson needs him.

He said: “I’m always learning and I feel like I’ve learned a lot under the gaffer and Gavin Strachan during the short time I’ve been here so far about different roles and different positions.

“I’m just opening my options up and hoping I can do a good enough job to keep myself in the team, whether that be midfield, right-wing, right-back or wing-back.

“Wherever I play I’ll try my best and that’s all I can do. I like to think I’m a versatile player and I’ll play wherever I’m needed to play.

“The gaffer gives me great confidence in playing me at right back and thinking I’m good enough to play there and do the job he wants me to do – as well as central midfield, right wing, up front, wherever.

“Confidence has been good from the start.”
