McCall, 52, who left City by mutual consent following his first spell in charge in February 2010, says he was approached by the club’s German owners while he was on holiday recently.

After interrupting his break to speak with the Bantams hierarchy and being enthused by their ambitions for the club, McCall says he could not resist the temptation of returning to the club.

At his lunch-time unveiling at a press conference, McCall insisted City will be getting a more rounded and experienced manager in his second stint at the club, which he feels has transformed for the better since his first time in charge.

McCall, who has relinquished his role on the coaching staff with Scotland, said: “I am looking forward to an exciting challenge ahead. It came right out of the blue, if I am honest.

“I was sad and disappointed when I saw Phil (Parkinson) had left. But the opportunity came to come and speak.

“It is a huge challenge, but one I am really relishing.

“It is a great opportunity at a fantastic football club. People say never go back as a player, but I came back as a player and had a little bit of success.

“It is all positives. I have obviously been out of day to day management for a year now and have had opportunities to go back.

“In an ideal world, I was looking for a club that had a good fanbase and structure and one matching my ambitions to what I want to do with a football club and it’s the perfect fit for me. The last time, it certainly wasn’t!”

McCall - who has signed a two-year deal - will be assisted by Kenny Black, his former number two at Rangers and Motherwell, with announcements on his backroom staff expected shortly.

Among the priorities are a new chief scout, fitness coach and goalkeeping coach.
