Villas-Boas convinced Capello has right to voice his backing for Terry

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has backed England coach Fabio Capello in the row over John Terry being stripped of the national captaincy and insisted the Italian had every right to make his unhappiness known.

Capello told Italian TV that he “absolutely” disagreed with the action by the Football Association.

The FA announced on Friday their decision to remove the armband from Terry until the outcome of his court case in July when the Chelsea defender will deny a charge of racially abusing QPR’s Anton Ferdinand.

Villas-Boas said: “He has the right to his opinion and to share that defence with the player.”

It is understood that Terry, 31, has no intention of quitting international football and is intent on playing for England at Euro 2012.

Sir Alex Ferguson, meanwhile, claims the FA and Capello need to sort out their differences over the matter. The England manager is due to meet FA chairman David Bernstein for talks later this week when the issue will be raised.

Manchester United’s manager said: “There has to be some communication regarding the issue. I know Fabio has been abroad but he’s back now so the next few days should reveal everything. It’s a difficult situation for both sides. When you are the manager of a team and have a captain that is an important part of that team then you don’t want to lose him, so I can understand there’s a lot of discussion and controversy about it.”

Chelsea have enjoyed a fitness boost ahead of their Premier League game at Everton with John Obi Mikel returning to full training after seven weeks on the sidelines.

The Nigeria international has been out since suffering a hamstring injury in December’s 1-1 draw at Tottenham, but was back with the rest of the squad ahead of Saturday’s trip to Goodison Park.

Fellow midfielder Frank Lampard is on course to make his return this weekend after missing the last three matches with a calf problem.

That leaves captain Terry and midfielder Ramires (both knee) as Chelsea’s only injured players, with manager Villas-Boas hoping both will be available for the following weekend’s FA Cup tie with Birmingham.

That game against the Midlands club is immediately followed by the Champions League last-16 first leg at Napoli.

The Birmingham Cup tie could also see the return of Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou from African Nations Cup duty.
