Wimbledon v Doncaster Rovers: Matty Blair grateful for support after difficult summer

The Doncaster Rovers defender’s brother Ross passed away in July after a long battle with cancer.

Blair, 29, has also become a father in the summer to complete an emotional few months.

The former York City man is indebted to the support of manager Darren Ferguson and Rovers following his brother’s death.

“It’s probably been the hardest moment of my life, but the gaffer has been superb with me and I can’t thank him enough,” said Blair. “I’ve said to him I’d rather be in than be off.

“I genuinely don’t think I could’ve had better people around me – the gaffer, his staff and the lads have been unbelievable with all their messages, and not forgetting the fans as well have been incredible.

“The birth of my baby boy was the best moment of my life, me and my wife have become parents for the first time,” said Blair

“I’m in a wave of emotions and I’m trying to keep positive.

“I’ve got my family and friends to help me through what has been a tough time. It’s an emotional whirlwind.”

Rovers head to AFC Wimbledon today looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

“We want to keep the run going,” said Ferguson. “A win would be great. We want to finish the month strong and if we get that win then the month has been very positive for us. We could’ve and should’ve won all our games.

“Wimbledon have been in every game and they’ve been unlucky not to get a win.”
