Corby will have gone home thinking they deserved at least a replay after losing this third-round tie to a controversial penalty on a very poor, heavily sanded playing surface on which it was impossible to play decent football.

Michael Gash's 40th-minute shot hit David Deeney's arm and referee Andy Madley decided it was hand to ball rather than the reverse. Andy Ferrell cracked in the spot-kick to win the game.

Corby bombarded York in the closing 15 minutes, Michael Ingham making a super save to deny Phil Gulliver and Leon Hibbert being inches away with a cross-shot.

In this period, York's defence was outstanding with David McGurk, arguably the most consistent player in the club's recent history, again in great form.

York have won 22 league and cup matches this season – 14 by a one-goal margin – reaching the last eight of the FA Trophy and being third in Blue Square Premier – a great tribute to manager Martin Foyle's work.

CORBY-BORN York striker David Longhurst died on the pitch at Bootham Crescent in September, 1990. His parents and supporters of both clubs marked a sad chapter in York's history in this first meeting of the clubs by laying wreaths in a ceremony in front of the David Longhurst Stand at the Shipton Street end of the ground during the interval on Saturday.
