York City 1 Tamworth 1: Graham on target for Minstermen

YORK CITY took a faltering step toward their hopes of promotion with a hard-earned draw against lowly Tamworth at windswept Bootham Crescent, but manager Martin Foyle will need his under-performing strikers to improve if the Minstermen are to achieve their aim.

York's failure to kill games after taking the lead continues to be a major handicap, leading marksman Richard Brodie's last goal coming on January 16. Sixteen games have been played since then with York finding the target only once in 11 of them, drawing blanks in the other five.

Fine defensive work has seen York remain in the fourth play-off position and despite their current attacking problems they must have every chance of going up with a five-point lead over Kettering.

Luke Graham's first goal for the club, a fine header from Courtney Pitt's 56th-minute centre, looked to have won the game.

But slack marking from Richard Tait's cross eight minutes from time saw unchallenged Michael Wylde get in a header at the far post which Michael Ingham parried for ex-York player Chris Smith to fire home the rebound – Tamworth's first goal in six games.

Foyle said: "I was disappointed with our first half display and although we improved after the break our strikers are a bit low on confidence. I felt we should have had a penalty when Richard Brodie was brought down in the second half. That would have changed the game."

York City: Ingham, Purkiss, Sangare, Graham, Meredith; Harsley (Carruthers, 78), Clarke, Barrett, Pitt (A Smith, 78); Brodie, Gash (Rankine, 73). Unused substitutes: McGurk, Lawless.
