York City 2 Forest Green 1: Reed and Macken on target for Minstermen

YORK CITY manager Gary Mills is well-known for his preference for a 4-3-3 formation, but this isn't set in stone and it was his decision to switch to 4-4-2 in the second half which proved pivotal.

"We were not getting anywhere and not putting pressure on Forest Green, who made life difficult for us in the first half by just sitting back and defending," he said after the 2-1 victory.

"But I felt we moved far better in the second half with two wingers and two strikers."

York have won six and drawn two of their nine league games since going down at Forest Green on October 30. This fine spell has seen them rise from 19th to 10th and with 11 home games left, they must have every chance of reaching the play-offs if they can maintain their momentum.

Michael Rankine had a headed 'goal' disallowed for pushing in the goalmouth and Ashley Chambers chipped inches too high in a dreary opening 45 minutes.

There was a big improvement on the turn-round with Levi Mackin doing well in midfield.

Substitute Jamie Reed, a very useful acquisition following his Bangor club record transfer, put York ahead on 56 minutes after Chambers' shot had rebounded from the woodwork.

That spurred Forest Green to come out of defence and they drew level on 76 minutes when Chris Smith tripped Reece Styche who got up to score from the penalty spot. But York gained a deserved three points when a flowing three-man move ended with Mackin scoring with a fierce 85th-minute low shot.
