York City v Wycombe Wanderers - Time running out in dreadful campaign for Minstermen

Manager Jackie McNamara’s men could be relegated as early as next weekend after a quite wretched campaign, the tone of which was set on the opening day against the team due at Bootham Crescent today.

Awful individual mistakes and a comedy own goal helped Wycombe Wanderers to a 3-0 victory at Adams Park and matters have rarely improved since.

The City board had hoped replacing Russ Wilcox with McNamara in November would herald a turnaround but that has not proved to be the case.

Despite that, York plan to stick with their manager next season regardless of whether back in non-League or not and the Scot has revealed that the planning is well under way.

“We have looked at the plan for both sides because, if the worst comes to the worst and we are down next year, we have to prepare for that,” said McNamara who remains hopeful that York can escape despite taking just three points from their last 10 games.

“Whether we go down or stay up, big changes will be needed. Hopefully those changes will take place in the League.

“It will change things in terms of finances and what players we can attract.

“But then it comes down to how we sell the club. This is a fantastic club with a new stadium on the way and training facilities that not many teams will have.”

York’s plight took a further turn for the worse in midweek when third bottom Stevenage drew 0-0 with Yeovil Town. It leaves City staring at relegation but McNamara insists all is not yet lost.

“Anything in football is possible and we have to keep believing that,” he added.

“It is never been done before, but there are still six massive games left and, hopefully, we can do something that will prove people wrong.”

Michael Coulson is out after suffering an injury in last weekend’s draw at home to Leyton Orient, while Huddersfield Town loanee Will Boyle is suspended following his red card.
