Accrington Stanley 2 York City 2: Windass’s late strike a sickener for Wilcox

A heavily-deflected free-kick from Josh Windass – the son of ex-Hull and Bradford City striker Dean – means York have thrown away 11 points by shipping goals during the last three minutes of games this season.

Wilcox’s side also surrendered the lead twice at the Crown Ground during this entertaining draw.

Fit-again midfielder Luke Summerfield and recalled top-scorer Jake Hyde both netted, but their second-half strikes were cancelled out by Sean Maguire and Windass.

Wilcox was subjected to calls for his head at the final whistle and he lamented: “I thought we had the points in the bag and the game can be so cruel.

“It was a deflected goal and I am devastated because it was a performance worthy of three points.

“Last season, when my Scunthorpe team was at the top of the table, that shot would have deflected over, but we need that little bit of luck.”

Summerfield’s 15-yard opening goal on 63 minutes also took a deflection off Dean Winnard.

Stanley levelled six minutes later when Maguire scored from 12 yards after Keith Lowe had headed away Piero Mingoia’s cross.

Hyde’s ninth goal of the season on 76 minutes saw York nudge ahead again as he converted from six yards following John McCombe’s square pass, but ultimately it was not enough.
