Blair sure Mills’s men will cope comfortably after taking step up

GOALSCORING hero Matty Blair believes York City will adapt quickly to life in the Football League.

The summer signing from Kidderminster Harriers continued his amazing streak of netting vital goals with the winner at Wembley.

It followed on from Blair scoring the decisive goal in the play-off semi-final triumph against Mansfield Town and York’s first goal in the 2-0 FA Trophy success over Newport County nine days ago.

Now, with York’s return to the Football League sealed, the club’s 12-goal hero believes the step up is one that will not be causing any sleepless nights at Bootham Crescent this summer.

He said: “I don’t know if there is much difference between the Conference and League Two.

“Obviously, Crawley and Stevenage have won the Conference and then won promotion again the following season.

“The standard is probably the same. I wouldn’t imagine we will go into League Two and think, ‘Wow, this is a complete change’.

“We are a good footballing team. We will carry on playing good football and probably better than most think.”

As confident as Blair is of York’s ability to acclimatise quickly once back in the League, his manager has admitted there will be some changes to the squad over the summer.

He added:“I know what the club means to the chairman (Jason McGill) and what money he has put in.

“He has backed me this season and we have worked hard together.

“We go again. It is about me enjoying the moment and having a nice holiday. But then the hard work starts again.

“That is the business we are in. I love it.

“What you can’t be in this game is sentimental as a manager. You have to make big decisions, as I made by going without Paddy McLaughlin against Luton. He had played most of the games.

“If I am sentimental as a manager then I won’t get anywhere. We have to make big decisions. I will do what I feel is right.

“You live and die by your decisions and if I feel the lads who have done superb this season are not right to come into League Two then I will shake their hand.

“I will not sit here and say everyone is coming with me because they are not.

“But what I will tell you is that those who it happens to will leave with a smile on their faces.

“There will be no animosity.”
